Smartphone, tablets and e-readers should have an automatic “bedtime mode” that stops them disrupting people’s sleep, says a leading doctor.

Professor Paul Gringras argued the setting should filter out the blue light that delays the body clock and keeps people awake later into the evening. The doctor, from Evelina Children’s Hospital in London, said every new model was “bluer and brighter”. He said manufacturers needed to show more “responsibility”.

As it gets darker in the evening, the body starts to produce the sleep hormone melatonin which helps people nod off. Certain wavelenghts of light, those at the blue-green end of the spectrum, can disrupt the system.

Professor Gringas was part of a study, published in Frontiers in Public Health, analyzing the light emitted by devices. It concluded there was a clear trend for new devices to be bigger, brighter, have higher levels of contrast and emit more blue light. The professor of children’s sleep medicine told the BBC News website:”That is great for use in the day, but awful for use at night.

“There is converging data to say if you are in front of one of these devices at night-time it could prevent you falling asleep by an extra hour.”

He said some sleep-aware apps had already been designed to reduce blue-green light emmisions. And that a bedtime mode could automatically filter out the blue as software such as flux already does. He said there needed to be “more responsibility from manufacturers” and the key is to automate it”.

Professor Gringas added: “It is not good enough to say do less and and accept this is the world we live in, they are fun devices but we do need some protection on what they do at night-time.”

Some people believe that the key to averting a potential food crisis my lie in recent advances science and biotechnology. By manipulating the genetic composition of basic crops, such as rice, it is possible to boost a plant’s rate of photosynthesis and to produce bigger crop yields. This process is known as genetic modification; plants that are produced in such a way are called genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Genetic modification can be carried out for a variety of purposes- not only to enhance to crop yield. Scientists have produced GMOs with higher than normal vitamin content, for example; other genetically modified crops are resistant to commonly used agricultural herbicides that used to kill the weeds round them, as well as insects and fungal and viral pests. Food products that are made from, or contain traces of genetically modified organisms are known as GM foods.

Scientists claimed that a GM strain of ‘super rice’ could boost rice yields by as much as 35 percent. Another strain called golden rice which contains added amounts of vitamin A could reduce vitamin A deficiency in more than 120 children worldwide. Some might think that such advances in biotechnology would be welcomed enthusiastically by people around the world. But, in fact, the issue of genetic modification has become one of the most controversial issued of our age. For many people, it highlights the fine line that exists between the benefits of technology and scientific innovation, on the one hand, and the risks of environmental destruction, on the other.

Text 3

Global warming is a serious issue. It is not a single issue but numerous environmental issues. Global warming is a rise of the earth surface temperature that has changed various life form on the Earth. One of the leading causes of global warming is greenhouse gases.

Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere act like a mirror and reflect back to the Earth a part of the heat radiation, which would otherwise be lost to space. The higher the concentration of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the more heat energy is being reflected back to the Earth. The emission of carbon dioxide into the environment mainly from burning fossil fuels – oil, gas, petrol, kerosene, etc. – has increased dramatically over the past 50 years.

Increasing global temperatures are causing a broad range a change. Sea levels are rising due to thermal expansion of the ocean, in addition to melting of land of ice. Amounts and patterns of precipitation do not remain unchanged. The total annual power of hurricanes has already increased markedly since 1975 because their average intensity and average duration have increased. In addition, there has been a hug correlation between hurricane power and tropical sea-surface temperature.

Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns increase the frequency, duration, and intensity of other extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, and tornadoes. Other effects of global warming include higher or lower agricultural yields. Further glacial retreat, reduced summer stream flows, and species extinctions. As a further effect of global warming, disease like malaria are returning into certain arcas where they have been extinguished earlier.

Although global warming is affecting the number and the magnitude of these events, it is difficult to connect specific events to global warming

Text 4

You have been at work for five hours straight. You mind is wandering, your shoulders are slumped, and your eyelids are heavy. You know you need to get back on track. Surprisingly, you best strategy might be to be slack off.

It may seem counterintuitive, but taking a break from the task at hand can jump-start your brain, boost your motivation and improve your focus. As recent research shows, more mindless distractions can have especially positive effects on your powers of concentration. Most of us ditched our daily nap after preschool, but recent experiments suggest that was likely a mistake. Having a snooze – even one as short as 10 minutes – can improve alertness, memory, and cognitive performance.

It might also help you organize your thoughts. In a study presented at a 2012 neuroscience conference, researchers at Georgetown University in Washington. D.C., observed people at rest. While subjects dozed, the right hemispheres of their brains – the area associated
with creativity – were more active than the left hemispheres. Andrei Medvedev, a scientist involved with the study, speculates that this activity might indicate that the brain is doing some useful housecleaning during its downtime, like classifying data and consolidating memories.

Experts say that between noon and 4 p.m. is the ideal time for napping. Some recommend taking a “caffeine nap” – drinking a cup of coffee, then snoozing for 15 minutes or less. The combo can boost energy and leave your feeling sharper.

Scrolling through galleries of baby animals is good for the soul, but it might benefit your performance, too. In a 2012 study conducted at Japan’s Hiroshima University, subjects were asked to play a version of the board game Operation, which involves precise motor skills. During a short break, one group was shown photos of puppies and kittens, while the other viewed pictures of older animals. When the groups resumed the game-participants who had viewed snaps in younger animals improved their scores by 34 percent. Their counterparts showed only a nine per cent improvement.

Because all brain activity bums glucose, even something as simple as multi-tasking can take a toll on your mental energy. You can help replenish those stores by taking a few moments to “reset” your brain. Daydreaming is one-method – when you let your mind wander, you are allowing it to cool down.
